Frequently Asked Questions
About Herbs
Q. What are soy isoflavones
and why are they important?
A. Isoflavones
are estrogen-like substances found in plants,
which can help to restore hormonal balance
when taken in the proper amount. Soy happens
to be the richest source of isoflavones.
Isoflavones are three of them: Daidzein,
genistein, and plycitein.
Q.
I have heard that soy isoflavones are
great for menopausal symptoms but how
much do I really need?
A. Regarding
any substance used as a natural therapy,
it's a common misconception that "more
is better". Phyto Soya, a clinically
proven supplement containing soy isoflavones
provides 35mg per daily dose. The optimum
level of soy isoflavones in Phyto Soya
proved to reduce hot flashes by up to 61%
in over half of the menopausal women who
participated in the study. Phyto Soya also
demonstrated remarkable results in other
menopausal symptoms, such as mood swings,
insomnia, and vaginal dryness. A recent study,
led on Phyto Soya showed the safety of
use of the extract on the endometrium (wombs),
and on the breast, on the opposite, the
HRT on base of oestrogens of synthesis,
Phyto Soya can be used without risk.
Q.
What is the purpose of fermenting soy?
A. Fermenting
soy activates its natural isoflavones,
making them more bioavailable and easier
to digest. Fermented soy is also the most
popular form of soy in the diet of Asian
cultures, some of the healthiest cultures
in the world.
Q.
Should someone with candida have problems
with fermented soy?
A. No.
Microbiological testing assures that no
Candida albicans is present in fermented
soy. The fermented soy used in Soy Essentials
and Super FiProFLAX does not contain any
active yeast cells or yeast proteins, which
would cause an allergic reaction.
Q.
What are beta-glucans?
A. Beta-glucans
are polysaccharides made of glucose molecules
joined together by a "beta" linkage
between various carbon atoms in the glucose
ring. The beta-glucans found in Health
From The Sun products are derived from
the cell walls of a common yeast, used
in the soy fermentation process. Beta-glucans
activate and modulate the immune system
and have antioxidant activity.
Q.
Do beta-glucans have research-backed
benefits?
A. Yes.
Numerous scientific studies by Tulane University
and Harvard Medical School have shown how
powerful beta-glucans are in stimulating
the immune system. Benefits include scavenging
free radicals, protection against ionizing
radiation, speeding recovery of damaged
tissue, increasing resistance to a variety
of bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic
infections, and inhibiting tumor growth.
Q.
What is the difference between the red
wine marc in French Parad'ox and grape
seed extract?
A. Red
wine marc is not just made from grape seeds,
but from the skins, seeds, and leaves of
red grapes. All of these components are
responsible for the potent antioxidant
content in red wine, which far surpasses
that of grape seed extract alone. French
Parad'ox provides this same antioxidant
content, but without the alcohol, sugar,
and sulfites.
Q.
I have heard that the antioxidants in French
Parad'ox can help prevent wrinkles. Is
this true?
A. Although
it was originally intended as a supplement
for managing high cholesterol and heart
disease, French Parad'ox has demonstrated
the ability to help improve skin texture
and elasticity and may even prevent wrinkles.
This is because the powerful antioxidants
found in French Parad'ox help protect against
free radical damage, a leading cause of
wrinkles and skin damage. Furthermore, French
Paradox contains Resveratrol, which has
amazing properties on the skin's elasticity.
Q.
Is there a herbal alternative to drugs
for easing joint discomfort? I am a vegetarian
and I won't use Glucosamine Sulfate.
A. Devil's
Claw is an herb that has been used for
centuries in traditional medicine, but
has only recently been proven in clinical
trials to be as effective as a reference
registered drug for joint pain. Devil's
Claw is the main ingredient in all-natural
and 100% vegetarian Phyto Joint, and has
no harmful side effects, even with long
term use.
Q.
Is BasiChol safe to use if I am using
cholesterol lowering drugs?
A. Absolutely.
BasiChol alone can help maintain healthy
cholesterol levels, however, if you have
already been prescribed cholesterol lowering
drugs, you will be glad to know that Basikol
was shown in clinical studies to heighten
the effects of statin drugs by up to 17%.
Q.
How does BasiChol work?
A. Basikol
contains phytosterols, plant compounds
that resemble cholesterol in chemical structure.
Their activity is simple; when consumed
in the proper amount (at least 800mg per
day) phytosterols compete with cholesterol
for absorption in the digestive tract.
The result is more cholesterol being allowed
to pass unabsorbed through the digestive
system and over time, this can help restore
normal cholesterol levels.
Q.
Why would I choose one form of BasiChol
over another?
A. It
depends on you! BasiChol oil is certified
organic flaxseed oil with added phytosterols,
so you get the heart healthy benefits of
omega-3 flax plus the natural cholesterol
control of BasiChol. But, if you are on
the go a lot, you'll appreciate the convenience
of Basikol capsules.
Q.
Does Phyto Bronz tan your skin without
sun exposure?
A. No.
Although the borage oil and antioxidants
in PhytoBronz can improve the condition
of your skin, with or without the sun,
it will not give you a "self tan".
If you use PhytoBronz as directed -before,
during, and after sun exposure, you will
notice a more rapid, longer lasting tan
and moisturized skin. Best of all- protection
from the sun's harmful UV rays.
Q.
Do I need to use sunscreen with PhytoBronz?
A. Yes.
PhytoBronz is the perfect complement to
your favorite sunscreen. The natural ingredients
in PhytoBronz help to stimulate production
of melanin (the skin's pigment), defend
against the free radicals caused by UV
rays, and maintain healthy, moisturized
skin. This would not be achieved by sunscreen
alone.
Q.
Is Phyto Bronz 100% vegetarian?
A. No.
The capsules are made from gelatin. The
vegetarian capsule material reacts with
beta-carotene (an important ingredient
in PhytoBronz) and destroys it.
Q.
What are titanium dioxide and red iron
oxide and are they safe?
A. Titanium
dioxide and red iron oxide are minerals
that are used in trace amounts to add natural
color and opaqueness to capsules.
These minerals are widely used in the supplement
industry and are completely safe.
Q.
I have seen Arkopharma products in Europe/other
countries that I don't see on your website.
Why?
A. In
some cases, European products are not available
in the United States for a variety of reasons.
If there is a product you are particularly
interested in, please contact us at info@arkopharma-us.com
and let us know. We may not be able to
order the product on an individual basis,
but your information may help us to obtain
the product in the future, or to suggest
another comparable product.
Q.
I have heard of an herb called boxwood,
but can't find any information on it.
What is it?
A. Boxwood
is a shrub that is native to Europe. Its
botanical name is Buxus sempervirens. Although
most of us only know it as an ornamental
plant, its leaves have been used in traditional
medicine for years to help people stay
healthy during the cold and flu season.
Clinical studies published in major medical
journals demonstrate boxwood's activity
to support the immune system and reduce
viral load. You can find boxwood in FluGuard,
one of the only boxwood products available
on the market.
Q.
Can any herbs help with the discomfort
of varicose veins?
A. Butcher's
Broom and Rosemary are herbs that have
always been highly regarded remedies for
reducing the discomfort of varicose veins
or poor circulation. Butcher's Broom helps
by acting as a natural vascoconstrictor
and anti-inflammatory. Rosemary helps to
stimulate blood flow and circulation. Both
herbs are found in CircuVeg and provide
noticeable results with continued use.
Q.
Is it necessary to take Glucosamine sulfate
in combination with Chondroitin sulfate?
A. No,
it is not necessary to use both substances
in combination. Both Glucosamine sulfate
and Chondroitin sulfate are effective when
used on their own.
Q.
If I am allergic to shellfish can I take
a product that contains Glucosamine sulfate?
A. Glucosamine
sulfate is normally derived from shellfish,
so it is extremely important to read product
labels or consult your physician before
using such a product if you have a shellfish
allergy. For aching joints, also consider
using a product that contains Chondroitin
sulfate, an herbal formula such as an herbal
COX-2 inhibitor, or supplements containing
GLA.

Q.
What is Perilla exactly and how does
it compare to flax oil as an Omega-3
source?
A. Perilla is a member of the mint family
and a common ingredient in the Japanese
diet. The oil extracted from Perilla
is as high in Omega-3 Alpha Linolenic
Acid (ALA) as flax (55% ALA). Perilla,
however, is also known as the "antioxidant
Omega-3", for its remarkably high
content of flavonoids and anthocyanins.
Rosmarinc acid, luteolin, chrysoeriol,
quercitin, catechin, and apigenin are
a few of the phenolic compounds found
in perilla oil. These antioxidants may
also be involved in allergy, cardiovascular
and cancer prevention. Perilla oil is
also thought by some to have a milder
taste than flaxseed oil.
